Causes for excessive hair fall

According to Mayoclinic people typically lose 50 to 100 hairs a day. This usually isn't noticeable because new hair is growing in at the same time. Hair loss occurs when new hair doesn't replace the hair that has fallen out or when lots of hair fall out at the same time. There are different causes for hair loss, which we summoned below:

  • Hereditary; The most common cause of hair loss is a hereditary condition that happens with aging. This condition is called androgenic alopecia, male-pattern baldness and female-pattern baldness.
  • Hormonal changes; A variety of conditions can cause permanent or temporary hair loss, including hormonal changes due to pregnancy, childbirth, menopause and thyroid problems.
  • Medical conditions; alopecia areata is a condition, in which the immune-system causes patchy hair loss and scalp infections.
  • Medications and supplements; Hair loss can be a side effect of certain drugs, such as those used for cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems, gout and high blood pressure.
  • Radiation therapy; with radiation therapy there is a chance your hair will never grow back. You often need a doctors or dermatologists opinion on your situation.
  • Stress/hairstyles; Many people experience a general thinning of hair several months after a physical or emotional shock. This type of hair loss is temporary and is not really an cause for excessive hair fall. With tight hairstyles, such as pigtails and cornrows, also excessive hair loss is not really the case but your hair can be pulled out. This is called traction alopecia.

Types of hair loss

There are a few types of hair loss that can cause your excessive hair fall. These types are: androgenic alopecia, alopecia areata, anagen effluvium, tinea capitis and lichen planopilaris. This types of hair conditions attack the scalp and hair follicles, resulting into bald patches, baldness, eczema and a severe hair loss.

Androgenic alopecia is a form of alopecia that is the most common. This type of hair loss is among men often due to hereditary. For women it often occurs around menopause. In men, the hair loss is first visible in the front hairline and the hairline at the temples, as well as at the top and the crown. Usually, the hair above the ears continues to grow backwards. However, your entire skull can become completely bald over time. In women, however, it takes place much more evenly. However, the hairline often remains intact.

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease. This means that the cells in your immune system accidentally attack the hair follicles, resulting in hair loss. The hair usually falls out in round patches, coin-sized pieces, distributed over the head. This skin condition is relatively common and can affect anyone at any age. The duration of the hair loss and its severity vary from person to person. Some people suffer from total baldness (alopecia totalis).

Other types of hair loss

Anagen effluvium refers according to Dermnetz to hair shedding that arises during the anagen or growth stage of the hair cycle. It is due to an acute injury to the hair follicles by an endogenous or exogenous cause, resulting in sudden diffuse shedding of structurally damaged hairs.

Tinea capitis is a fungal infection that can affect the scalp and the hair shaft. It causes small bald patches that are scaly and itchy, also brittle hair breaks easy, the scalp is tender and the patches look red or grey.

Lichen planopilaris is a variant of lichen planus in which a perifollicular infiltrate affects and ultimately destroys the hair follicles. It is usually on the hairy head and is the main cause of cicatricial alopecia. It mainly occurs in women and not in children. Lichen planopilaris causes skin around the hair follicles to turn red and the rest of the scalp light purple.

What can you do about excessive hair fall

Now you understand that different types of hair loss can cause your excessive hair fall. We give you advise on what helps your hair and scalp condition to grow your hair back and what doesn’t help.

  • Use effective products to balance the amount of nutrients and vitamins in your body and combat against deficiencies. On this pages you can read what sort of vitamins and nutrients stimulate a healthy hair grow.
  •  Eating a healthy diet, with products that contain several vitamins and nutrients, such as biotin and zinc.
  • Use a hair growth stimulating shampoo. A shampoo that can help you to grow your hair faster and healthier, often has active ingredients that have a positive effect on the condition of your hair and scalp
  • Try avoiding stressful situations. During stress your body will produce the hormone Adrenaline. This causes less blood flow in the scalp which means less nutrients for your hair follicles.
  •  Quit smoking, if you smoke try to quit. Smoking is bad for a lot of things but also for your hair. Smoking causes your veins to constrict, which means less nutrients for the hair follicles.
  • Do not wear tight hairstyles. This type of hairstyles such as ponytails can cause your hair to shed.
  • Do not rub or scratch your hair if you suffer from any hair or scalp condition.

Things you need to avoid

  •  Do not use products, that contain ingredients, that can stimulate your hair loss or other side-effects, such as Minoxidil.
  •  Washing your hair more often, doesn’t mean you will have less hair loss, if you do not use healthy and effective products of Neofollics.
  • Don’t pull out your hair, this can destroy your hair follicle. If your hair follicle is destroyed, it will not grow back.

Why does hair fall off

Normally there fall between 50 and 100 hairs of your head on a regular day .When you suffer from hair loss this is more. Your hair grows in three phases which are the anagen phase, catagen phase and telogen phase. In the anagen phase your hair grows and the hair follicle pushes the hair out of the skin. This phase usually takes the longest on the scalp this is often a couple years.

The catagen phase is the phase in which the hair rests. The growth has ended and the hair begins to loosen. In the telogen phase the hair will slowly fall off. There also grows another hair on the hair follicle.

So when you suffer from more hair loss than normal this can be due to the fact that your hair entered the telogen phase more quickly and let go. Or that the anagen phase has become shorter.

Conclusion

Hair loss is not fun. And excessive hair fall is no fun at all. There can be different causes and different solutions. The Neofollics advanced hair loss treatment is effective against many forms of hair loss in normal situations, unfortunately not yet proven for example after heavy chemotherapy.
